What does an underground jumbo do? The core functions and application fields of underground jumbo

2025-10-27 Visits:

An underground jumbo, also known as a jumbo drill or drill jumbo, is a specialized piece of heavy equipment used in underground mining and tunneling operations. Its main function is to drill holes into rock surfaces for the placement of explosives during blasting. This process is a critical step in creating tunnels, mine shafts, and underground chambers.

   I. Core Functions and Operational Principles

The primary function of an underground jumbo is to drill a large number of uniformly distributed holes in the underground rock mass according to predefined engineering designs. These holes serve two main purposes: one is for blasting—drilling blast holes to place explosives, which break the rock to form the desired tunnel or chamber cross-section; the other is for rock reinforcement—drilling anchor holes or bolt holes to install anchors, bolts, or other reinforcement components, ensuring the stability of the surrounding rock after excavation.

   II. Major Application Fields

Underground jumbos are widely used in multiple underground engineering fields due to their high efficiency and precision:

   1. Tunnel construction: Including transportation tunnels (railway, highway, subway tunnels), water conservancy tunnels (diversion tunnels, power station tailrace tunnels), and municipal tunnels (sewage, gas pipelines). In tunnel excavation, jumbos drill blast holes in the working face, and after blasting, the broken rock is cleared to advance the tunnel.

   2. Mine development: Used in underground metal mines (iron ore, copper ore) and non-metal mines for drilling blast holes in ore bodies and roadway excavation. They play a key role in improving mining efficiency and ensuring mine roadway stability.

   3. Underground powerhouse and cavern construction: Such as the underground powerhouse of hydropower stations, underground storage caverns, and underground military facilities. These projects require high-precision excavation, and jumbos' accurate drilling capability ensures the cavern's cross-sectional shape and size meet design standards.

The underground jumbo is an indispensable key equipment in modern underground engineering. Its continuous upgrading and application not only promote the progress of underground construction technology but also provide strong support for the development of infrastructure, mining, and other industries.
